KOBAYASHI Chisa Glass Installation

The works are delineated by thin, tendril-like vessels that arc and meander from one node-like swelling to another, or they simply plant themselves on the floor as a support. Surprisingly, these delicate forms are made of glass, thinly blown then delicately wrapped with tengucho and ganpi papers. The diaphanous quality of these Japanese papers renders a life-like skin texture to the surface of the object, evoking a mysterious presence. The glass is entirely laminated with paper and painted black—subverting the quintessential features of glass, namely its transparency and brittle fragility—rendering it supple and strong.
The form is not modelled after any particular entity of this world; it took its shape naturally through the artistic process of combining various elements together. Chisa Kobayashi describes her own work as having “any shape but no shape in particular.” She extracts shapeless memories and emotions from her psyche and gives them form, resulting in works that leave the onlookers with a feeling of familiarity, or perhaps déjà vu. “Any shape but no shape in particular” may just be a human universal, deep within consciousness.
